Archive for the “General” Category

Well, apart from the “joke” of the title that probably won’t be understood if you’re not spanish (and probably they won’t understand either) I have already done most of the updating. I’m up to date with the version of Wordpress thanks to the magnificent Wordpress plugin Wordpress Automatic Update. In addition I’ve added some new plugins and I’m in a try-out period to be sure nothing fails. Fortunately the theme fSpring Widgets by Fredrik Fahlstad even with my modifications, that let’s face it, are not expert ones, works perfectly (as far as I can tell) with 2.51 version of Wordpress

Now the only thing left to be done is to replace the Babel plugin I was using until now to write this blog in two languages, with the xLanguage plugin that I discovered recently and seems to allow the blog to be totally bilingual, translating all: categories, pages, Feeds, etc.. and not only the posts. The only problem is that it seems far more complicated to implement and I am still studying it because I have to add  some localization files and don’t know exactly how many nor where (the only one I have is the spanish one that I put on /wp-content/languages/). Well….. everything  for internationalization.

The new plugins I used and I’m testing are:

  • Admin Drop Down Menu - by Ozh, which allows a much more comfortable dashboard for the administration of the blog.
  • Google XML sitemaps - To create a site map (obviously) that is more friendly with the search engines (essential)
  • Maintenance Mode - To don’t drive you crazy when I’m making changes to the blog.
  • WP-EditArea- by the Spanish guy anieto, it allows a much more friendly edition of the theme archives inside the wordpress environment, acting as a code editorWell, That’s it for now, I’ll keep you informed

I haven´t updated my blog for almost 6 months now. My absence during most of that time was forced, since due to problems with my ISP I was four months without internet, four months full of promises, annoyances and scandalous increase of the telephone invoice. In the end this was solved changing operator. Just when I could return to connect I discovered that the version of Wordpress had changed and this, plus the enormous work load and lack of free time were delaying the updating (and not by lack of desire). But now I’ve decided to put blog up to date, which will take some time since there are so many changes to do: to update the CMS, plugins, even template won’t probabley work with the new version (not counting the many changes I’ve done myself to the template), so I request patience, at least to the only reader who, incomprehensibly, has not eliminated my feed. I’ll be back …..

Finally, after waiting for a long time, the new Nokia Internet Tablet N810 is in my hands. I was about to buy the N800 when Nokia announced the launch of the new model, so I decided to wait (have been two veeeeery long months). By the end it has been launched in Spain (almost a month later than in the United States), but only 30 units were available in the Nokia online shop and have already been exhausted by now (if I was not the first to order one…)

Finally, after a mistake from Ups that turned a delivery of 2 days in a wait of more than a week, it has arrived. And the first thing I´ve installed (after some “playing” you know ) has been Maemo Wordpy, an offline client for Wordpress created by Daniel Yerga that lets you write entries in the tablet to upload them to the blog later. A great program that, for what I´ve read will be even better,it even permits resize of images before uploading (well,by html tags). So this whole “brick” text has served to test this program, and create and upload this entry from my N810, so as you can see it works very well. And I am sooooo happy with my new acquisition

Note: Images aren’t so good, but I wanted to try how my E65+N810 combo works. The results are pretty good. It’s a good mobile solution

Blogdeldia.org

[Note: I have translated this post because I translate everything I write as part of my “internationalization politics” (lol) but even when this contest isn't mentioned as a “Spain only”, I think the prizes can only be sent to Spain's national territory so.....I can be wrogn though, there's nothing in the rules about this subject]

Yesterday I received an e-mail from Rafael R. Lopez, member/admin of Blog del dia (Blog of the Day)  informing me that they have launched a competition for the redesign of the blog. This contest is about the creation of an original template compatible with wordpress 2.2. In addition, the first prize for the winner, apart from a fixed link in the footer of the blog will be a iPod Nano 8Gb very interesting. You can see the rules here: BASES. I must thank Rafael for inviting me to participate, which I’d love to do. It is not that I have no ideas for designs to make a template for the blog, unfortunately my programming skills are not equal to the challenge to build an original template from scratch. More one in which important things such as CSS validation and usability are involved. May this few words serve as my little contribution to the distribution of the contest from this humble, and still in diapers, blog.

Anyway I must invite you to visit the blog, because, apart from the competition is a very interesting blog that I fortunately discovered the other day. They make every day a review of blogs written on a wide variety of topics in (as far as I could see) the language of Cervantes, including an interview with the author / admin of the blog. The theme of the blogs mentioned is the most diverse. Also, each day the give as a prize to one of these blogs (recommended and voted by readers) the award “Blog of the Day” which entitles you to hang in the winner blog a banner indicating that has been chosen. A major initiative that, from here, I must applaud. In order for you to find it, you have the link in my sidebar, in the section “Indispensable” of the blogroll.
